I am a four year member of the Iowa State University Cyclone Football “Varsity” Marching Band! The Iowa State Marching Band is a group of 345 student musician that work together to create a pre-game and halftime show for each home football game.
Marching band has taught me great time management and teamwork. We rehearse for an hour and half every week night and are at football games four hours before kickoff through the entire game. Throughout the season I am also responsible to learn at least five shows and memorize over fifty pieces of music. I need to be able to work with others to make our shows look great and to be in the correct spot otherwise the whole band looks bad.
The Salt Company is the collegiate student ministry of Cornerstone church in Ames, Iowa. Through Salt I lead a small group of five to seven students called a connection group that meets on a weekly basis. Leading a connection group has improved my communication and organization skills teaching me how to facilitate an effective discussion.
I am currently an executive member and teacher for the Iowa State Gaffer’s Guild or more commonly known as the glass blowing club. As a Gaffer I get to work with 1000°C molten glass and shape it into many different pieces. I have made paperweights, cups, swans, vases and many other nic nacs. Take a look at some of my work below:
As the social chair for the Gaffer’s guild I am in charge of creating and planning social events for the club. We hold multiple events over the semester and I have learned how to organize and create events for a large group. Our studio is being demolished this year and will be shut down for about three years. Due to the shut down I helped plan many events to make large amounts of pieces that the club can sell while we are without a studio.
In the spring of 2016 I became a teacher for the beginner classes for the guild. I teach students and community members how to safely use the studio to make glass pieces. Teaching has helped me learn how to explain concepts and techniques that I have learned to people who have never experienced glass work. My ability to verbalize different techniques and my thought processes has improved dramatically as teacher.
I am a member of the Iowa Alpha Tau Beta Pi all engineering honors society. In order to be in inducted into Tau Beta Pi I had to be within the top eighth of my junior class and help the community by participating in an adopting a highway event.
